Keep Pets Safe On the 4th of July
Immediately following the 4th of July holiday, Animal Haven will experience a spike in the number of lost and stray pets entering the shelter. Many pets (both dogs and cats) are frightened by the lights and loud noises caused by fireworks and may run away from their homes in a panic. By taking a few extra precautions, you can minimize the risk of losing your pet:
- Keep your pet indoors on the 4th of July. Also consider keeping them indoors during the days and nights leading up to the holiday, as many people will light fireworks days before and after the actual holiday.
- Be sure that your pet has an ID tag on at all times with your current phone number and information. If your pet gets lost, having proper identification or a registered microchip will greatly improve the odds that they will be returned to you. If your pet doesn’t have a microchip, you can purchase one from Animal Haven for only $25 before the 4th. No appointment is needed, just stop by the shelter.
If you live in Johnson County, and lose your pet on the 4th, please stop by the Lost Pet Center, located across 67th St. from the Adoption Center at 9827 W. 67th St., as soon as possible. If your pet is not at Animal Haven, we can fill out a lost pet report and give you resources for other places to look.
Have a safe, and happy, 4th of July!
